The journal Novitates Caribaea is a biannual scientific publication (new issues are released in January and July of each year), edited and financed by the National Museum of Natural History “Prof. Eugenio de Jesús Marcano,” a governmental institution of the Dominican Republic dedicated to the study and conservation of the biodiversity of Hispaniola and the Caribbean region, as well as to education and scientific dissemination. The National Museum of Natural History is located in the Plaza de la Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte, in the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It was built in 1974 and opened its doors to the public in 1982. It is an autonomous institution with legal and budgetary status, attached to the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources
The journal was first published in 1999 and for several years thereafter it was published annually. As of July 2018, it publishes two issues a year (January and July). Novitates Caribaea is an open access journal (see Open Access Policies in the About section), and it is included in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). The submission or application, processing, publication and reading of the contents is free of charge, under the terms of the Creative Commons CC BY-NC 4.0: Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International license. This journal is totally free and follows the Diamond Open Access model.
